Can I bring my own guns?

Yes, you can bring your own firearms to shoot, subject to restrictions. See Private Range Rules on our website for a complete list of acceptable firearms and ammunition, as well as those that are prohibited.

Do I have to be a member to bring my own guns?

Yes.  And we make becoming a member here fast and easy.  We offer Day Pass packages, as well as various levels of Annual Memberships for both individuals and families.  See a member of our store staff or visit Memberships on our website for complete details and prices.

Do I need to bring my gun license or firearm purchase paperwork to shoot my own? Do I need a hunting license or gun permit?

No. We do not require proof of firearm ownership.  Any personal pistols, however, would need an adult 21 years or older to be used on the range.

What do I need to know when bringing my own guns?

All firearms must be secured in a holster, gun case, box, or gun sock. Customers entering the store with uncased or unholstered firearms will be required to purchase a gun sock or case or will be asked to return the firearm(s) to their vehicle.  Waistband carry without a proper holster is strictly prohibited.   Once inside the store, do NOT unholster or uncase your firearm(s).  The first time you shoot here, you will be required to attend a Safety Briefing detailing our Private Range Rules and outlining the do’s and don’ts of shooting here.  You will be expected to be able to safely load, unload and clear your firearm(s) and you must possess basic shooting skills on your firearm(s) or you will not be permitted to shoot.  The Rangemaster or RSO will make the final determination.  Private Instruction is generally available for inexperienced shooters.

What kind of ammo can I bring?

When using our firearms, you must use our ammunition.  If you are using your own firearms on our private range, then you may bring your own ammunition so long as it is factory new.  We do not accept hand loaded, reloaded or loose ammunition.  We also cannot accept tracers, incendiary rounds, green tip, armor piercing or steel core ammunition.  If you are shooting clays with us, please make sure your shells are target load, 7 ½ shot or smaller.  For a complete list of Private Range Rules, go to our website.

Can someone teach me how to use my gun?

Yes.  We have private instruction, as well as group training classes and certification.  Ask a member of our store staff for private instruction availability or a list of upcoming training classes or click the Training tab on our website.

Can I reserve a shooting lane ahead of time?

Only Members may reserve shooting lanes. We cannot reserve lanes for non-members or guests of members. Each member may reserve only one lane, however, if space is available, we are happy to issue separate lanes at the time of check in. Lane reservations will be held for 15 minutes but the hour time limit (if applicable) will begin at the time of the reservation. If the reservation is not filled within that time frame, it will be released. Reserving specific lanes or adjacent lanes is a request we will accommodate when possible – however it is not guaranteed. Reservations are subject to availability based on membership level and are on a first come first serve basis.  We recommend arriving at least 15 minutes prior to your reserved time.  Online reservations are available at  Make sure to have your membership number available when booking your lane reservation.

Do I need to book more than 1 hour?

If you are making a reservation for the Private Member Range, you can book additional time that you plan to use.  If you book more than one hour but do not use the additional time, you will still be required to pay for it.

Something came up. I can’t make my appointment. Is there any penalty?

We ask that our members be considerate of our lane time.  If, for some reason, you cannot make it for your scheduled appointment, please cancel the appointment online as early as you can.  While we do not charge a penalty for “no shows” or late cancellations (within 72 hours), members will lose their online reservation privilege after 3 such events.

Do you offer Private Instruction or Training Classes?

Yes.  We offer both.  Private Instruction can be purchased in half hour increments at the time of your visit (based on Instructor availability) or you can schedule one on one instruction in advance, based on your needs and specific firearms.  We also offer formal Instructor-led classroom training on the many aspects of firearms and firearms safety.  Our curriculum includes NRA and USCCA certificate and non-certificate courses.  For a complete list of current classes, or to sign up, click the Training tab on our website.

Do you offer gunsmithing?

No, not at this time. We do not repair or clean firearms.

When are you open?

We are open all year round, rain or shine, but our business hours can vary by season.  It is best to check our current operating hours on our website.

Are your shooting bays indoors or outdoors?

All of our shooting bays are outdoors, under a covered pavilion and some bays are heated.  We are open rain or shine.  We only close in cases of extreme weather or when it is extremely cold.  Your safety is our number 1 priority.  If you have any concerns about weather, you can always check our website for range status or simply give our store a call.

What should I wear?

We want our guests to dress comfortably, but any clothing that creates a hazard, dangerous distraction or causes offense to other guests and/or staff is strictly prohibited at Sunset Hill Shooting Range. This includes clothing with offensive writing or images. Tennis shoes or other closed-toe shoes are recommended on the shooting range as is a properly (forward) facing billed (ball) cap.  We reserve the right to refuse business to anyone dressed in a manner deemed inappropriate or offensive by SHSR staff.

Do I have to wear a mask?

No.  Masks are not required.  However, you are welcome to wear a mask, if you wish.

Can I bring small children?

No.  Unfortunately, children under the age of 8 are not permitted out on the range.  Since it is difficult to properly fit a young child with effective hearing protection, there is the possibility they may experience hearing damage.  There is a small viewing area inside the store where small children may observe, as long as they are attended at all times by a parent or guardian over the age of 21.

My children are over 8 years of age. What can they shoot?

On our Rental Gallery, children 8 years and older can shoot our Air Guns.  Long guns (rifles and shotguns) are available to children over 13 years of age.  16 years and older can shoot handguns and full auto is only available to 18 years and older.  Full auto is only available on our Rental Gallery.  Full auto is NOT permitted on the Private Member Range.

Is there anything else that can prevent me from entering the range?

Your safety and the safety of our employees and other customers are always our first priority.   If you appear intoxicated, or otherwise impaired, you will not be allowed to enter the range.  The Rangemaster has the sole authority to determine your fitness.

I’m pregnant. Can I shoot or observe?

No.  Shooting firearms exposes you to lead and high noise levels, both of which are dangerous to your unborn child.

Do I (my group) need a reservation?

While we do not require reservations, we strongly recommend them – especially on weekends.  Wait times for walk in guests are frequently in excess of one hour.  Guests with reservations are taken before walk ins.  Occasionally we are forced to suspend taking walk ins when the wait time to shoot gets too long.  Either way, we recommend you arrive early at least 15 minutes).  Our booking system allows reservations 3 weeks into the future.  If the time slot you want is grayed out, it means that time is fully booked or not available yet.  When you are booking, select the size of your group, then hit the drop-down arrow for number of people in your group.  The highest number listed is the most slots still available.  For special requests, email us at

If I make a reservation, will I start shooting at that time?

We make every attempt to get you out on the range with your Instructor within 15 minutes of your booked time, conditions permitting. Please arrive at least 15 minutes prior to your appointment time to allow for the check-in process. If your appointment is for 4 PM and you are late, you may not be able to enter the range– depending on how many people are waiting.  Customers with appointments are taken ahead of walk-ins.

Will I have to sign a waiver?

Yes, anyone who wishes to enter the range must complete our Liability Waiver prior to checking in. This includes all shooters, minors and observers. We recommend completing our waiver before arriving at You can also complete the waiver in-store. The Liability Waiver is a legally binding document and must be filled out with your legal name as it appears on your ID, as well as your accurate phone number and email address. If any of the information supplied on the waiver does not match your ID, you will be required to complete the waiver again. (During the waiver process, you can opt out of receiving any marketing contacts from us. We do not sell our customer information to third parties.)

Can I bring my own safety gear?

Yes, you may bring your own safety gear, provided it is safety rated equipment, specifically designed for shooting sports.  We do not accept headphones or sunglasses as safety gear.  We also sell eye and ear protection for a nominal fee.  See the Rental Gallery Price List for details.

I filled out a waiver the last time I was here, do I need to fill out another one?

If you filled out a waiver within the last six (6) months and none of your important information (name, address, legal status, etc.) has changed, you will not be required to fill out a new waiver. At times throughout the year, however, when we make changes to our waiver, everyone is required to fill out a new waiver, regardless of how long it has been since they last completed one.

Do I need to bring my ID? If so, what types of ID do you accept?

Yes, you must have a valid, government issued ID to enter the range.  You must physically bring the ID with you.  Photos, copies, images, texts, emails, etc. are NOT acceptable.   Expired ID’s are NOT acceptable.  If you have a valid address change form, you must also have the corresponding unexpired ID.

We accept these forms of identification:

US Passport
US State Driver’s License / ID Card
US Work Visa
Foreign Passport
Foreign Driver’s License

What ID’s do minors need? My child looks younger than his age.

Minors under the age of 18 must have an adult 21 years or older to complete their Liability Waiver and that adult must accompany the minor(s) at all times while on our property.  No ID is required for minors, however, if your child looks younger than his / her actual age, you may want to bring their birth certificate.  Since safety is our number one concern, if your child appears younger than his / her actual age, they may not be permitted to shoot.  The Rangemaster or the Store Manager have the final decision on whether a child can shoot.

I have a history of mental illness or a past felony. Am I allowed on the range?

No.  You are not allowed on the range with a history of mental illness or a past felony either as a shooter or observer.

I have no shooting experience. Is that a problem?

Not at all.  Our facility is extremely beginner friendly.  In our Rental Gallery, we provide you (and your group, if applicable) with a Certified Instructor.  Your Instructor acts as your tour guide and personal Safety Officer. The Instructor adapts to each person’s level of expertise.  If you provide them with a starting point on your previous experience, even if that point is 0, they will adjust from there, and make sure you have a safe and enjoyable time.  If you are bringing your own firearms, see the section on Private Range questions.

I have a large group. What is the largest group you can accommodate?

We allow groups of all sizes for both our Rental Gallery and Private Member Range.  Online booking is available for groups up to 18 people.  We offer an array of options for larger groups than is unmatched at other shooting ranges.  During normal business hours, we can accommodate groups up to 50.  Larger groups can rent the entire range on normally closed days.  Deposits are required for groups over 18 people.  We will be happy to discuss your specific needs when you email us at

Do you offer any packages for special occasions, such as Bachelor / Bachelorette parties?

Yes.  Our VIP Experience is the perfect way to celebrate that special occasion.  Each package is catered specifically to your group.  And our VIP Experience offers a selection of firearms not available anywhere else.  So, if you’d like to skip the long lines and be treated like the VIP you are, email us at
